  • Is Lárëawen a viable female name in Quenya?

This a viable combination but it may not mean what you think it does. lárea is “rich” in the sense of “rich food”, so Láreawen would mean “tasty maiden”. I suspect Almawen or Almarien would be closer to your intended meaning, with alma or almare

  • Query re names of Turin's outlaw companions

This is not a problem with Aldaleon’s website, but rather is a problem with one of its data sources, in particular the Eldamo data set which I maintain. There is a known issue where some mannish names are attributed to the wrong language. See this bug report here:

    github.com

I haven’t gotten around to fixing it, because most of my focus has been on the Elvish languages, and I haven’t had time to sort through the evidence to figure out the likely origins of these names.

  • Gloss “fëanturi” by Eldamo Import

I personally use the -u dual for nouns ending in a consonant, and the -t dual for nouns ending in a vowel.

Exception: if a vocalic noun has a t or d near the end of the word, I use the -u dual, e.g. aldu “two trees”

That said, the dual is a “special case” and is never required.

  • best elvish word for 'wisdom'

gûl has “dark connotations” because of its association with words like morgul “sorcery, black arts”.

    Q. nólë should be fine, though.

  • Aldaleon: Newer/Older buttons switched in Discussion navigation

Hey Aldaleon, I just noticed that the Newer/Older navigation buttons at the bottom of the Discussions page are switched. I thought you might want to know so you could fix it in a future release.

  • Sindarin Phonetic Development (Part 1)

I’ve been working on detailed analysis of Sindarin phonetic development for the next release of Eldamo: eldamo.org

I’ve decided to post some early drafts on Tamas Ferencz’s Aglardh site, and am cross-posting the link here in case folks are interested.

Fair warning: these posts are going to be very technical.

  • Translating My Personal Name

While I think sére would also be fine, I see no reason to avoid raine. In addition to RAY “net”, we also have the root RAY “smile”, to which raine “peace” might be related.

Tolkien also deliberately replaced sére with raine in the Quenya translation of Gloria in Exlcesis Deo. I believe that sére wasn’t completely rejected, it just didn’t have the connotation Tolkien wanted.

    eldamo.org

That’s also why suggested raine over sére: I think raine is closer in sense to Germanic frid-

  • Translating My Personal Name

quilde is Early Quenya, and is a bit iffy. It also means “peace” in the sense of “peace and quiet”. I would suggest raine “peace” instead, so perhaps Eruraine

  • Gloss “nírë” by Eldamo Import

“Power” and “control” fall more under the root TUR and it’s derivatives:

  • Version 0.7.0 of Eldamo

Oof, yes, I should probably have explained what Eldamo is before posting about it. That’s my fault for assuming that everyone here would already know about it :)
