root. *look

A primitive appearing as {✶gu̯iri >>} ✶u̯iri [ᴱ√WIRI] in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s serving as the basis for G. gwir- “look, look at” and G. gwirith “expression, look (on face); look, regard, fixed look; countenance” (GL/46-47). There are no signs of this root in Tolkien’s later writing.

gwini

root. sparkle

A root in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s with variant forms ᴱ√GWIMI and ᴱ√GWINI and glossed “sparkle” (QL/104). They had derivatives in both Qenya and Gnomish such as ᴱQ. wimpele “a twinkling”, ᴱQ. wintil “a glint”, G. gwim “a spark, wink”, and G. gwinc “a spark, flash” (QL/104, GL/45). There are no signs of these roots in Tolkien’s later writing.

hese

root. wither

A root in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s glossed “wither”, with derivatives having to do with withered things and winter (QL/40). In the contemporaneous Gnomish Lexicon the root was given as heth², but it is not clear whether this was intended to be a variant root or a replacement (GL/49). There are no signs of this root in Tolkien’s later writing, but I think it is worth salvaging as a Neo-Eldarin root ᴺ√KHES “wither” to salvage Gnomish and Early Qenya wither-words.

root. *corner

Tolkien gave this root as WIKI in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s with one derivative ᴱQ. ’winka “corner, nook” (QL/104) but the root was listed together with the GW- roots and the ’ in its Qenya derivative seems to indicate its proper form would be ✱ᴱ√GWIKI. There are no signs of this root in Tolkien’s later writing.

gwete

root. *wind, turn, bend

A root given as the basis for the verb G. gwed- “wind, turn, bend (intr.)” from the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s, with other derivatives like ᴱQ. wente/G. gwent “brook, small river” (GL/46). It seems to be an updated form of ᴱ√GWEÐE of similar meaning as it appeared in the contemporaneous Qenya Lexicon, since Tolkien first wrote this verb as gwedh- and the primitive form as gu̯eđ before changing it to gwed- < gu̯et. However, despite gu̯eđ >> gu̯et Tolkien did leave most of the gwedh- derivatives unchanged, so it seems he was undecided only whether ᴱ√GWETE replaced ᴱ√GWEÐE or was just a variant. In any case, there are no signs of any of these roots in Tolkien’s later writing.

qṛðṛ

root. *wicked, evil

An unglossed root in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s with variants ᴱ√QṚŘṚ [QṚÐṚ] and ᴱ√QARA [marked with a “?”] as well as derivatives ᴱQ. qarda “bad” and ᴱQ. qarka “perverse, naughty” (QL/78). The root was also mentioned in the contemporaneous Gnomish Lexicon as qṛđ with derivatives like G. curdhu “sin, wickedness, evil” and G. cwarth “evil, bad, wicked” (GL/28). There are no signs of this root in Tolkien’s later writing.

vasa

root. *wing

An unglossed root in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s with derivatives like ᴱQ. vasa- “rush”, ᴱQ. vaska “making a plash or rush”, and ᴱQ. vasse “wing” (QL/100); in Qenya the root was blended with ᴱ√GWASA (QL/103). The distinction of the roots can be seen in their Gnomish derivatives: G. basbos “splash” and G. bass “wing, pinion” (GL/22) vs. G. gwass “rush, rushing, noise of rushing, splash” (GL/44). There are no signs of either of these roots in Tolkien’s later writing.

gwene

root. *large, wide

A root in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s, with the derivatives like G. gwen(n) “big, large; fine” and G. Bladorwen “Wide Earth, Mother Earth” (GL/23, 45), thus probably meaning “✱large, wide”. The name Bladorwen did not survive in the Legendarium and there are no signs of this root in Tolkien’s later writing.

olo

root. tip

A root in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s glossed “tip”, with derivatives like ᴱQ. óleme “elbow” and ᴱQ. ole “three” (QL/69). It seems to have served as the basis for ᴱ√LOHO, an early root for various flower words (QL/55). There are no signs that ᴱ√OLO was used for “tip” in Tolkien’s later writings (except perhaps in √OLOB “branch”), and ᴱ√LOHO evolved into √LOT(H) “flower”.
