dîn

noun. silence

Adjectival use seems to be attested in several place names (Amon Dín "Silent Hill", etc.), though an adjective dínen.1 is also attested (Rath Dínen "Silent Street"). When compared with other toponyms where lenition does occur (Taur-na-Chardhîn "Forest of the Southern Silence" in WJ/185,193 and Dor Dhínen in WJ/333,338), the forms dîn and dínen clearly seem to be unmutated. Absence of lenition in these examples from LotR was therefore tentatively explained by resistance to mutation (as in Nan Tathren, Ered Mithrin). However, Tolkien apparently changed his mind in his unfinished index of names from LotR, where he explains both words as mutated adjectives whose unlenited forms are respectively tîn.2
and tínen . Such hesitations between mutated and unmutated forms is not unusual, for instance a similar issue is met with gaear and aear . Of course, Taur-na-Chardhîn and Dor Dhínen would hardly be explainable in that alternate scenario

sed

root. rest

This root first appeared as ᴹ√SED “rest” in The Etymologies of the 1930s with derivatives like ᴹQ. sére “rest, repose, peace” and N. sîdh “peace”, along with the name of the Valië ᴹQ. Este < ᴹ✶ezdē (Ety/SED). The root √SED “rest” along with the etymology of Este reappeared in both the Outline of Phonetic Development (OP1) from the 1930s (PE19/45) and the Outline of Phonology (OP2) from the early 1950s (PE19/92), and again in revisions to the OP2 page annotated in green ink and thus probably from 1970 (PE19/91 and note #110).

The root √SED “rest” was mentioned a couple times in the Quenya Verbal System of the 1940s as the basis for the verb ᴹQ. ser- “rest, repose” (PE22/102, 125) and again (unglossed) in the Quendi and Eldar essay of 1959-60 as the basis for Este (WJ/403). In the sense “peace” this root had some competition, however. In the first version of the Gloria in Excelsis Deo prayer from the mid-1960s, Tolkien used Q. sívë for “peace”, revised to Q. sérë in the second version and then Q. rainë (VT44/32). The word Q. sívë “peace” reappeared in unpublished etymological notes from 1969 derived from the root √SIB “rest, quiet” (VT44/35).

Neo-Eldarin: For purpose of Neo-Eldarin, I would use √SED for the act of resting and so Q. sérë “peace” = “restfulness (personal peace)”, and would use √SIB = “quiet, ✱stillness, absence of activity” and so Q. sívë “peace” = “absence of activity or violence (environmental peace)”. I would use Q. rainë as “good will” in connection to √RAY “smile”.

din Reconstructed

root. silence

A hypothetical (Sindarin-only?) root serving as the basis for Sindarin words like dîn “silence” and dínen “silent” (PE17/95, 98). Tolkien’s use of these words in The Lord of the Rings is rather inconsistent, reflecting shifting rules on the circumstances in which words mutated in Sindarin. In his Unfinished Index of The Lord of the Rings, he said these words were tîn and tínen (RC/551). Given the conflict this would have with the root √TIN “spark”, for purposes of Neo-Eldarin I think it is best to assume this root is √DIN.

Early Primitive Elvish

qḷðḷ

root. *quiet

A root in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s given as ᴱ√QḶŘḶ [QḶÐḶ] “quiet” with derivatives like ᴱQ. qilde “quiet, rest, hush” and ᴱQ. qildi- “rest, stay quiet, be quiet” (QL/78); immediately below it had a variant form ᴱ√QILI² (QL/77). It had derivatives in the contemporaneous Gnomish Lexicon as well such as G. cwîl “quiet, peaceful, gentle” and G. cwildred “bat (animal)” (GL/28).

However, in a table of primitive forms elsewhere in the Gnomish Lexicon, primitive qḷd was deleted (GL/23) and in yet another section Tolkien gave a distinct base form gwil-² with derivatives like G. gwîl “cessation, quiescence, leaving off” and G. gwilthi “peace”, with a possible primitive form ᴱ√u̯il marked by Tolkien with a “?” (GL/45). Tolkien compared G. gwil-² to Q. qil-, so perhaps in this instance he imagined primitive initial > in Qenya, following the pattern whereby initial voiced stops were unvoiced.

Some form of this root seems to have survived in the Declension of Nouns from the early 1930s to serve as the basis for ᴹQ. qilir “quiet” < ᴹ✶ku̯ilẹz (PE21/34).

Neo-Eldarin: I think it is worth positing a Neo-Eldarin root ᴺ√KWILID “quiet” to preserve these earlier Quenya words.
