undómë

twilight

undómë noun "twilight", usually of the time near evening, not near dawn (that is tindómë)

undómë

noun. twilight, time near evening

A word for “twilight” used of the time near evening (LotR/1111). Since it followed the light, Tolkien said this was the “sad twilight”, an image or sign of the passing of beautiful things (NM/279). Its second element is ✶dōmē (NM/279), and its first element might be un(du) “down” referring to sunset; hat-tip to Parmandil for this suggestion.

nancar-

undo

#nancar- vb. "undo" (destroy). Cited in the form nancari- ("k"), apparently including the connecting vowel of the aorist (PE17:166)

nancar-

verb. to undo, to undo, *destroy

A verb for “undo” appearing in notes from around 1959 as a combination of nan- “back (again)” and car- “do” (PE17/166).

Neo-Quenya: Helge Fauskanger also used this verb to mean “destroy” in his NQNT (NQNT), but I prefer ᴺQ. fehta- this meaning; see that entry for discussion.

undë

adverb. less

A neologism for “less” as an adverb proposed by Paul Strack in a 2022-02-27 chat Vinyë Lambengolmor Discord Server (VLDS), inspired by the adjective/pronoun undo “less”.

lacarina

adjective. undone, undone, *unfinished, incomplete

A negation of carina “done” in Late Notes on Verb Structure (LVS) from around 1969, glossed “undone” (PE22/156). For purposes of Neo-Quenya, I would use this mainly in the sense “✱unfinished, incomplete” rather than for an undoing/reversal of a work.

Conceptual Development: The Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s had ᴱQ. ilkarna “unfinished”, a combination of the early negative prefix ᴱQ. il- with ᴱQ. karina “finished” (QL/41).

úcárima

adjective. hard to do, difficult, *undoable, unmakeable; hard to do, difficult

A word glossed “hard to do, difficult” in Late Notes on Verb Structure (LVS) from 1969, a negated form of cárima “able to be done” (PE22/156). This word is from the brief period in 1969 where Tolkien decided that the main negative root was √LA, and ú- meant only “bad, hard, difficult, unfavourable”.

Neo-Quenya: For most of the 1960s, the prefix ú- was used for negation, and thus úcárima is likely to be interpreted as “✱undoable, unmakeable” for those Neo-Quenya writers that subscribe to u-negation; see the entry on the Quenya negative for discussion. To minimize ambiguity, I would instead use hraia or hranga to mean “difficult” for purposes of Neo-Quenya, and urucárima for “hard to make / do”.

undómiel

feminine name. Evenstar

A sobriquet of Arwen translated “Evenstar” (LotR/227, RC/757), a compound of undómë “twilight” and archaic †él “star”. The second element could also be interpreted as -iel “daughter”, giving this name the same meaning of that of her ancestress Tinúviel (Sindarin for “Daugher of Twilight”), whom Arwen was said to resemble (LotR/227).

únut-

verb. to untie

A neologism coined by Paul Strack in 2018 specifically for Eldamo, a negation of [ᴹQ.] nut- “to tie”. Helge Fauskanger had ᴺQ. avanut- for “untie” in his NQNT (NQNT), but the prefix ava- means refusal or forbiddance, so I think the connotation is wrong.
