A place in Númenor where the Great Bear Dance (ruxotompalë) took place (NM/335). Its meaning is unclear, but it might be an elaboration [ᴱQ.] tompa “drum” (QL/94), given that a similar root √TOM used “of resonant sounds” appeared in Tolkien’s later writings (PE17/138).
Quenya
ruxotompalë
noun. Great Bear-dance
tompollë
place name. Great Bear-dance
A term for the “Great Bear Dance” in notes from around 1965, first given as (rejected) ruxopandalë (NM/335). The derivation for this word is unclear, but its first element resembles rusco “fox” from the late 1960s. Its second element may be related to Tompollë, the place where the dance took place. Note that in The Nature of Middle Earth as published, this word appears as ruxöalë, but Carl Hostetter corrected this to ruxotompalë in the errata to his book.
