Early name for the town S. Calembel in Lord of the Rings drafts from the 1940s (WR/437). Its final element appears to be ost “city, town”, but the meaning of its initial element is unclear. Roman Rausch suggested that it might be caer “ten” or some derivative of ᴹ√KAY “lie down” (EE/3.45). It might also be caer “flat isle” appearing in linguistic notes around the same period (PE22/126).
