Cat name

Alice Antonova #3120

Hello!

A couple of days ago during the stormy evening I've found a tiny little kitten in the garden and took it home. Since no-one claimed it as theirs I decided to keep it. He's a gorgeous grey (silverfish) and it seems a kitten Nebelung. My first idea (when I saw him) was to call him smt Scandinavian, but I'm not sure what name shall it be.

I was trying to search for smt elvish as well (since I'm a huge fan of many fantasy stories), my mom even suggested calling him Gandalf, but I'm not sure about it, it doesn't suit him. Plus I've read that cat's name should have some "sh", "s" or "ch" sounds.

So I've been trying to come up with some name that would mean misty, or shadowy or something like that. Perhaps you would be able to suggest smt?

"Misty" is a nice name for a grey kitten! And you're right, it is best to give cats name with fricative sounds, because they can hear them best.

I can offer these:

  • In Exilic Quenya: Hísion (masculine) / Hísiel (feminine), meaning "mist-son" and "mist-daughter" respectively.

  • In Sindarin: Híthion (masc.) / Híthiel (fem.).

This is one of those cases where the Quenya and Sindarin forms are nearly identical; in fact, if you go for slightly more classical Quenya, then the Quenya names would in fact be pronounced the same as the Sindarin ones, replacing the 's' with 'þ'.

Let me know if you need help with figuring out the pronunciations.
