Quenya translation for "Teaching Lore"?

This is intended to include physical skills, book knowledge, and the lore of The Wise. Best I can come up with is:

Noltarălē Ingolë

I'm am quite confused as to how you got to this result. Normally a macron is used to indicate a long vowel (though in Quenya you should use an accute accent for that), and a breve to indicate an unstressed vowel... neither of which makes any sense here.

I would offer a gerund formation ñoltie ingole "teaching lore", or perhaps with an abstract noun ñoltale ingole "the act of teaching lore".

You can also use the verb saita- instead of ñolta-, so saitie ingole or saitale ingole respectively. Both verbs are neologisms (i.e. words reconstructed or extrapolated based on attested elements and derivational rules) which mean "teach", but consider their semantics:

  • ñolta- is a causative formation from the root √ÑGOL "knowledge, wisdom, lore", essentially meaning "make knowledge(able)".
  • saita- is likewise a causative formation, but from the root √SAY "know, understand", thus basically meaning "make know/understand".

Choose whichever one you think is more fitting.

Thanks! I'm starting to get a bit of understanding of Sindarin but Quenya still eludes my brain.

For Quenya I would recommend taking a look at Paul Strack's new Eldamo Introductory Quenya course, it is the best and most up-to-date resource for learning. You can also take a look at the grammar articles on Eldamo, but I recommend starting with the course.

Thanks!

I've been working my way thru a Sindarin course and the flashcards on this site.

You know how some people say their brain just goes haywire when they have to do math? My brain does that when I read linguistic material. It just short-circuits. :( So, it's very slow going for me to learn this stuff. I suspect it will take a couple more years for me to slog thru the Sindarin. :(

But I'll give this one a try and hope my next attempts at Quenya are better for it!

What course are you using for Sindarin, if I may ask?

Real Elvish Academy has one I've been slogging through.

(That's not a slur on the materials, it's an honest recognition of my complete lack of natural talent at learning the topic.)

I see, that is a good resource! Good luck with your studies.

If you're interested, there's a Discord community focused on Tolkienian linguistics where you could ask for help and feedback and engage with other learners, called Vinyë Lambengolmor.
