Fellow nerds, thank you in advance for any advice/thoughts you can offer. I'm looking to get two tattoos in Elvish - "courage" and "death" (from Theoden's rally cry). It seems the best/truest translations of those words are hûr and gûr respectively. If anyone knows what those words would look like in Elvish characters, that would be amazing. I would personally prefer that and tattooing "hûr gûr" on my body isn't ideal. Thank you so much!

Hello Alyssa! I want to first say welcome. Now it is usually the general consensus to take the English word and transcribe it with Tengwar due to that new information may come out rendering what we offer incorrect or out of date.
so hûr does not mean “courage” it means “readiness for action, vigor, fiery spirit” we have hûl “cry of encouragement in battle” Huor a male name meaning “heart-vigor, courage” and the Neo-Sindarin word thalas derived from Early Noldorin thalos.
gûr means “heart (inner mind). You are looking for gurth “death” but there is also guru “death (abstract), NS ammal “(death) agony”, and NS gwanu “death (act of dying)”
this is why we suggest to transcribe in Tengwar for anything permanent.
