Devising a Name

Chase Via #3798

Máriessë!

As I have lately posted on the Tolkien Forum, I am working on a poetic narrative and am hoping to use Quenya or Sindarin in rendering the name of a sky-being encountered by the very human characters within. I feel that both languages have a marvelous power to be "un-mundane"!

The nature of the story has pushed me to devise a name that means "hunter from the clouds" or that contains "cloud" as a central element of its form. On the Tolkien Forum, I requested help with creating a Quenya name in particular, though if anyone has the time and knowledge to give advice or afford a translation in either Quenya or Sindarin, I would be most grateful! I am a fledgling student of both, but I have no knowledge of forming names with them and am in great need of advice.

These are all Sindarin. So, I believe "cloud hunter" would be Fanfaron

  • S. fân n. “(white) cloud; veil, curtain; form or vision of a spiritual being; spirit [embodied]”
  • N. #faron n. “hunter”

There is N. Fannor m. “Cloud-lord” attested.

  • Faniel would be "daughter of the could"
  • Fanwen would be "cloud maiden"
  • Fanon would be "Cloud with male suffix"
  • Fanion would be "son of the cloud"

Many thanks to you, Rínor! These are excellent suggestions.
