inga

noun. top, top, highest point

A word have the same root (√ING) as the name Ingwë, giving a clue to the original meaning of that name. In a few places, the plural Ingar of this word was used as another name for the Vanyar (MR/230, 265), but Tolkien more frequently used the plural Ingwë for this purpose: see Ingwi.

In later writings, this word was generally presented as a noun meaning “top, highest point” (PM/340, VT47/28), but in the Etymologies, ᴹQ. inga was an adjective glossed “first”, as in “foremost” (Ety/ING).

Tolkien stated that “inga ... applied to shapes pointing upward” but also that it “referred primarily to position and could be used of tops relatively broad” (VT47/28). Therefore, inga referred to the highest level whether it was a single point or a plateau.

* phanto

noun. whale

This word only appears in the name of the Númenórean ship Turuphanto “Wooden-whale” (UT/191). The language of the name is unclear, but Carl Hostetter suggested (Tolklang/5.31) that the name is likely to be Quenya, since ᴱQ. turu meant “wood”. If so, the second element phanto might be Quenya for “whale”. This spelling is unusual, however. In Quenya, [f] was normally spelled “f”, while the spelling “ph” appeared only in languages like Sindarin or Adûnaic.

Conceptual Development: The only other attested words for “whale” are the very early G. uin and G. uimoth in the Gnomish Lexicon (GL/74).

cund

noun. prince

This word is only directly attested in the Etymologies, appearing as N. †cunn “prince” (Ety/KUNDŪ) and marked as an archaic form (EtyAC/KUNDŪ). It still appears in later writings as a element in some first-age Sindarin names from The Silmarillion: Baragund, Belegund and (perhaps) Felagund. Its Quenya cognate Q. cundo also appears in later writings (PM/260, PE17/117-8), indicating that †cund may have remained conceptually valid. Elsewhere, the third-age Sindarin word for “prince” is said to be caun¹ (PE17/102), so it seems likely the older form †cund fell out use.

In earlier writings, the root of marriage-related words appeared as either √BES and √BED. The later forms Q. veru “husband” and Q. veri “wife” (VT49/45) could have been derived from either root, since both ✶[d] and ✶[s] became Q. [r] between vowels. If, however, we wish to preserve other derivatives of this root, the only reasonable option is √BES. @@@

North sindarin

celegorm

masculine name. Hasty-riser

Third son of Fëanor (S/60), his name was adapted from his mother-name Q. Tyelcormo “Hasty-riser” (PM/353). His name was in the North Sindarin dialect, since the final [m] was preserved (VT41/10). It is a compound of S. celeg “hasty” and an adaptation of Q. ormo “riser”.

Conceptual Development: In earliest Lost Tales, his name was G. Celegorm (LT2/241). In Silmarillion drafts from the 1930s, the name was changed to N. Celegorn (LR/226 note §41), in keeping with the revised phonology of Noldorin for which final [m] usually became [v]. In the Etymologies, the name was given as a combination of N. celeg “swift” and the lenited form of N. gorn “impetuous” (Ety/KYELEK, GOR).

In his “Words, Phrases and Passages from The Lord of the Rings”, Tolkien considered connecting the -gorn in Celegorn with the final element of Aragorn, but was generally disatisfied with the meaning of the name (PE17/112-3). The form Celegorm was restored in Silmarillion revisions from the 1950s-60s (MR/177) and Tolkien devised the “North Sindarin” explanation of his name in “The Shibboleth of Fëanor” from 1968, as noted above (PM/353).

ered lómin

place name. Echoing Mountains

The mountains to the east of Hithlum translated “Echoing Mountains” (S/118), a combination of the plural of orod “mountain” and NS. lómin “echoing” (SA/lóm). This name must be in the North Sindarin dialect, since in ordinary (West) Sindarin word for “echoing” was S. loven (PE17/133).

Conceptual Development: In Silmarillion drafts from the 1930s, this name first appeared as Eryd-Lómin with the meaning “Mountains of Shadow” (SM/139, 296), with the second element a remnant of G. lómin “shadowy”. This name was generally revised to Eredwethion “Shadowy Mountains” (SM/140, 221), while the name Eredlómin was repurposed for the “Echoing Mountains” (SM/268, LR/259).

Since the adjective lómin no longer fit Noldorin phonology, Tolkien explained it as a loan word from Ilk. lómen “echoing”, adapted from the name Ilk. Lóminorthin (Ety/LAM). After Tolkien abandoned the Ilkorin language, he formulated the new derivation from the North Sindarin dialect, as noted above.
