Beware, older languages below! The languages below were invented during Tolkien's earlier period and should be used with caution. Remember to never, ever mix words from different languages!

Early Primitive Elvish

vḷðḷ

root. *worth, value

The unglossed root ᴱ√VḶŘḶ [VḶÐḶ] appeared in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s with derivatives like ᴱQ. valda “worth; worthy, dear” and ᴱQ. vildi- “it matters, is of significance, worth, moment” (QL/102). In the contemporaneous Gnomish Lexicon the primitive form was given as vḷd with derivatives like G. bâl “worthy, important; great, mighty” (GL/21, 23). ᴱN. balt “might” from the 1920s could be related (PE13/138). I think it is worth positing a Neo-Root ᴺ√BALAD “worth, value” as an elaboration on √BAL to serve as the basis for words having to do with worth, value and significance.
