tengyl

proper name. Signifer

An Elvish name of “the significant star” mentioned in some late notes by Tolkien (MR/385, note #19), probably derived from the same primitive form as its Quenya cognate Q. Tannacolli. It has a variant form Taengyl, probably a cognate of the Quenya variant form Tainacolli. Its gloss “Signifer” is Latin for “sign-bearer”; hat-tip to Gilruin for point this out to me.
