miru

noun. wine

A word appearing as ᴱQ. miru “wine” in the Qenya Lexicon and Poetic and Mythological Words of Eldarissa of the 1910s as the basis for the name of the drink of the Valar: ᴱQ. miruvóre (QL/61; PME/61).

Neo-Quenya: In Tolkien’s later writing, the initial element of Q. miruvórë was derived from the Valarin word Val. mirub “wine”, but I think ᴺQ. miru “wine” can also be retained as an adaptation of that Valarin word.

Early Quenya [LT1A/Miruvor; PME/061; QL/061] Group: Eldamo. Published by

mildi

collective noun. pease

A word appearing as ᴱQ. mildi “pease” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s derived from primitive ᴱ✶mldẏǝ under the early root ᴱ√MLŘL [MḶÐḶ] (QL/62), where “pease” is an archaic word for “pea”. Tolkien somewhat cryptically said it was “used plural or as sing”. I interpret this to mean that it could be used as a collective plural form, or as a singular with stem mildy-. Tolkien could have been indicating that its singular ✱milde was a back formation from its apparently plural form mildi, much how English “pea” was derived from apparently plural “pease”, originally from Latin “pisa”.

Neo-Quenya: I would adapt this word as ᴺQ. mildë (mildi-) “pea” for purposes of Neo-Quenya.

Early Quenya [QL/062] Group: Eldamo. Published by

milin

noun. grain of seed

A noun in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s glossed “grain of seed” under the early root ᴱ√MILI (QL/61).

Early Quenya [QL/061] Group: Eldamo. Published by

milt

noun. semen

A word appearing as ᴱQ. milt “semen” under the early root ᴱ√MILI which had various “seed” derivatives (QL/61).

Neo-Quenya: I’d adapt this word as ᴺQ. miltë (milti-) “semen” for purposes of Neo-Quenya, though its etymology in Tolkien’s later conceptions of the language isn’t clear (< ✱ᴺ√MILIT?).

Early Quenya [QL/061] Group: Eldamo. Published by

mimbe

noun. flesh

A word for “flesh” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s derived from the early root ᴱ√MIMI (QL/61).

Early Quenya [QL/061] Group: Eldamo. Published by

mindl

noun. piece of flesh

A word for a “piece of flesh” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s derived from the early root ᴱ√MIMI (QL/61). It seems to be an example of the Early Quenya phonetic rule whereby [[eq|final nasal + [ḷ] became [ndḷ]]], so that -mḷ > -ndḷ (PE12/25).

Early Quenya [QL/061] Group: Eldamo. Published by

mirmila

adjective. rippling

A word in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s glossed “rippling”, an adjectival form of ᴱQ. mirmile “ripple of laughter” (QL/61). Its use in the phrase ᴱQ. miru mirmila “✱wine rippling” indicates it could be applied to liquids.

Early Quenya [QL/061] Group: Eldamo. Published by

mirúva

adjective. like wine, winy

A word appearing as ᴱQ. mirúva “like wine, winy” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s, an adjectival form of ᴱQ. miru “wine” (QL/61).

Neo-Quenya: Since I retain ᴺQ. miru “wine” for purposes of Neo-Quenya, I would retain ᴺQ. mirúva as well.

Early Quenya [QL/061] Group: Eldamo. Published by

mis

noun. urine

A noun appearing as ᴱQ. mis (mist-) “urine” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s from the early root ᴱ√MISI “mingere”, which is Latin for “urinate” (QL/62).

Neo-Quenya: I’d retain ᴺQ. mis (mist-) “urine” for purposes of Neo-Quenya, based on the later root ᴹ√MIS having to do with wet things. It conflicts somewhat with Q. mistë < √MIZDI “drizzle, light rain”, but I don’t see that as a problem, as the word for “urine” might have originated euphemistically as “make rain”.

Early Quenya [QL/062] Group: Eldamo. Published by

millo

noun. oil

The word ᴱQ. millo “oil” appeared in Early Noldorin Word-lists of the 1920s as a cognate of ᴱN. bliw, both derived from primitive ᴱ✶mḷgo (PE13/139). In the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s the word for “oil” was ᴱQ. ilma derived from the early root ᴱ√ILI “shine oily” (QL/42).

Neo-Quenya: For purposes of Neo-Quenya I’d retain ᴺQ. millo for “oil” from a Neo-Root ᴺ√MILIG, where lg became ll (PE19/93). However, I would assume a stem form of millu- and a primitive form ✱mil’gu to better explain the final w in ᴺS. blîw “oil”.

Early Quenya [PE13/139] Group: Eldamo. Published by

mimbematwa

adjective. carnivorous

A word appearing as ᴱQ. koisimatwa “carnivorous” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s, a combination of ᴱQ. mimbe “flesh” and ᴱQ. -matwa “✱eating” (QL/48).

Early Quenya [QL/061] Group: Eldamo. Published by

minga-ránar

in the moon waning

The seventeenth line of the Oilima Markirya poem (MC/213). The first word is the adjective minga “waning” followed by an inflected form ránar of Rána “Moon”. Gilson, Welden, and Hostetter suggest it might be an idiomatic use of the dative (PE16/85), but I think it might be a variant form of the locative: the r-locative.

Decomposition: Broken into its constituent elements, this phrase would be:

> minga-rána-r = “✱waning-moon-in”

Early Quenya [MC/213] Group: Eldamo. Published by

mingwe

noun. butter

The word for “butter” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s was ᴱQ. manya derived from the early root ᴱ√MṆGṆ (QL/62) with the cognate G. mang “butter” from the contemporaneous Gnomish Lexicon (GL/56). A similar form ᴱQ. mingwe “butter” appeared in Early Qenya Word-lists of the 1920s (PE16/141, 145), along with an unrelated form ᴱQ. úle “butter” that also appeared as an adjective in the phrase masta {mingwea >>} úlea]] “bread and butter” (PE16/141). In contemporaneous Early Noldorin Word-lists of the 1920s, the Qenya word for “butter” was ᴱQ. telpe rather than having its usual meaning “silver” as in earlier and later writings (PE13/154).

Neo-Quenya: Of these forms, I prefer ᴺQ. manya for “butter” for purposes of Neo-Quenya since it has the clearest (Neo-Sindarin) cognate ᴺS. mang. I assume these words are derived from a Neo-Root ᴺ√MANGYA where ngy became ng in (Old) Sindarin but became ndy in Quenya and then developed into ny.

Neo-Quenya: The 1968 word Q. mulë “meal” (PE17/115) indicates ✱√MUL survived in Tolkien’s later writing, so I would retain ᴺQ. mulmin “mill” for purposes of Neo-Quenya.

itse

noun. small fly

The word ᴱQ. itse “a small fly” appeared in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s derived from the early root ᴱ√ITI “peck, bite (of flies), annoy” (QL/43).

Conceptual Development: A similar (archaic) word ᴹQ. tsette “fly” appeared in notes on The Feanorian Alphabet from the 1940s (PE22/51). This word is questionable given that while ps and ks were listed among valid initial clusters in Quenya, ts was not (PE19/38, 80).

Neo-Quenya: I would retain the Early Qenya word as ᴺQ. itsë “small fly”.

It was also mentioned in the contemporaneous Poetic and Mythological Words of Eldarissa, but with -nd- written above it indicating a variant form tenda (PME/91). A similar word tenge “finger” appeared Early Qenya Word-lists of the 1920s (PE16/137), but ᴱQ. lepta was written next to it, perhaps as a replacement, since after this point finger-words were primarily based on √LEP.

Conceptual Development: A possible precursor to this word is ᴱQ. ulme “a kind of wine” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s, derived the early root ᴱ√ULU “pour” (QL/97).

ion

noun. son

In the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s, ᴱQ. Ion was the “mystic name of God, 2nd Person of Blessed Trinity”, that is the “Son” in the “Father, Son, Holy Ghost” trinity (QL/43). In that document yon or yond- was given in a couple of places as (archaic?) words for “son” (QL/43, 106). In Early Noldorin Word-lists of the 1920s, Tolkien gave ion as the equivalent of ᴱN. “son”, along with a plural form yondi (PE13/113). However, in the English-Qenya Dictionary Tolkien said yondi was an irregular plural form of ᴱQ. yondo “son” (PE15/77), and this is the form he typically used in later writings.
