A root in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s serving as the basis for adjective G. laur “threatening, foreboding, darkling” (GL/53) as well as verb G. lur- “frown, scowl” and noun G. lurc “a frown, scowl” (GL/55). There are no signs of this root in Tolkien’s later writing.
