A root in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s given as fṇt with derivatives like G. fant “crooked, bent, bowed” and G. fintha- “to twist; deceive, cheat, take in” (GL/34-35). There are no signs of this root in Tolkien’s later writing.
