G. rantha “arch, bridge” from the contemporaneous Gnomish Lexicon is clearly also related (GL/65). In later writings, Tolkien revised the Elvish words for “bridge”, driving them from ᴹ√YAT or √YAN, but this root may have remanifested later as √RATH “climb”.
