maedhros

masculine name. *Shapely and Red-haired

Eldest son of Fëanor (S/60). His name is an adaption of elements from both his mother-name Q. Maitimo “Well-shaped One” and his nickname Q. Russandol “Copper-top”: S. maed “shapely” and S. ross “red-haired” (PM/366). As such, his name was more properly spelled Maedros (PM/352).

Conceptual Development: When he first appeared in the earliest Lost Tales, this character’s name was G. Maidros (LT2/241), a name that earlier in the tales was used for the grandfather of Fëanor (LT1/146). This form continued to be used in the Silmarillion drafts from the 1930s (SM/88, LR/223), but in The Etymologies, Tolkien said it was an anglicanization of proper Noldorin Maidhros “Pale-glitter” (Ety/MAD), which also appeared in The Etymologies as N. Maedhros (Ety/RUS).

The form Maidhros continued to appear in Silmarillion revisions from the 1950s-60s (WJ/115), but for the most part earlier Maidros was revised to Maedhros (MR/177), the form Christopher Tolkien adopted for the published version of The Silmarillion: see N. [[n|[ai] revised to [ae]]]. Tolkien constructed the derivation given above in The Shibboleth of Fëanor, where he actually used the form Maedros (PM/352, 366). Later still he considered revising the name to Maedron (PM/372, note #2), but this change was not carried out in the texts.

merifind

adjective. Black-haired

A neologism for “black-haired” coined by Fiona Jallings, a combination of ✶mori “black” and S. find “hair”, where the e is the result of ancient i-affection. Compare this with the similarly derived [N.] merilin(n) “nightingale, ✱(orig.) dark singer” (Ety/TIN). Likely in modern Sindarin this form would become merifin(n) since final nd became nn in polysyllables.

nolya

dark-haired

nolya ("ñ")adj. "dark-haired" (PE17:125), i.e. very dark brown

nolya

adjective. dark-haired, dark-haired, *brown-haired

A word for “dark-haired”, part of a paradigm in which the Elvish tribe names were derived from their predominant hair color, in notes perhaps from around 1959-60:

> √ÑGOL = dark-hued, dark-brown. OQ ñolda, dark-haired; but after special association with Clan, this was not much used; the colour word taking form ñolya (cf. vanya [= blonde > Vanyar]). The predominant colour of Noldorin hair was very dark brown; no Elf had absolute black hair (PE17/125).

In earlier iterations of this concept, Tolkien instead had Q. {losca, loksa “brown of hair” >> hrúva >>} hróva “dark, dark brown (of hair)”, but Tolkien then added ñolda as an alternative before marking the entire note as rejected (PE17/154-155).

Neo-Quenya: In this paradigm, Tolkien (temporarily) rejected the notion that √ÑGOL referred to wisdom, but this meaning was restored later (e.g. on PM/340 from 1968). However, I still think nolya might be used for “brown-haired” by way of a reversal of the association, where it referred to hair like the Noldor rather than being the basis of the tribe name.

laurefindele

masculine name. Golden Haired

The Quenya name of Glorfindel from which his Sindarin name is derived (PE17/17, 119). It is a compound of laurë “gold” and findelë “lock, head of hair”.

Conceptual Development: In an early name list, ᴱQ. Laurifindl or ᴱQ. Kulufindl was given as the Quenya equivalent of G. Glorfindel (PE13/104). In later writings, the name appeared variously as Laurefindil, Laurefin(de) and Laurefindele, and in one place was inverted to Findelaure (PE17/17, 119).

vanya

fair

vanya (1) adj. "fair" (FS), "beautiful" (BAN), a word referring to beauty that is "due to lack of fault, or blemish" (PE17:150), hence Arda Vanya as an alternative to Arda Alahasta for "Arda Unmarred" (ibid., compare MR:254). Nominal pl. Vanyar "the Fair", the first clan of the Eldar; the original meaning of this stem was "pale, light-coloured, not brown or dark" (WJ:382, 383, stem given as WAN), "properly = white complexion and blonde hair" (PE17:154, stem given as GWAN); stems BAN vs. WAN discussed, see PE17:150.

fidhrin

adjective. haired

The adjective G. fidhrin “haired” appeared as an element in the word G. logrifidhrin (or logrifindel) “curly haired” from the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s (GL/54). It is apparently an elaboration of fidhra “[collective] hair” (GL/35).

Neo-Sindarin: I would adapt this word as ᴺS. fidhren “having hair, -haired” < ✱spinrinā using the more typical Sindarin adjective suffix S. -ren, where the dhr is the result of the Sindarin sound change whereby [[s|[nr] became [ðr]]]. I think this is better than coining an Sindarin variant of Q. finda “having hair, -haired” (PM/340), since a cognate of that word would collide with S. fend “door”.

logrifidhrin

An adjective in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s appearing as logrifidhrin or logrifindel “curly haired” (GL/42), a combination of G. logrin “curly” with G. fidhrin or findel.
