Tolkien’s translation of the Lord's Prayer into Quenya
Composed in the 1950s, this work was published in the "Words of Joy (Part One)" article in Vinyar Tengwar #43. There are six versions of it, and we offer its final state, although in a slightly altered form in order to mend the mistakes in writing (as noted in the article) with the help of previous versions. Tolkien did not provide an English translation, but we offer the original here:
Our Father, Who art in heaven
Hallowed be Thy Name;
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.
