I would say that while the usual meaning is “running”, “shielding of” it can be extended as we see with rehtie “rescue, saving”, quetie “words”

I’d say you should try if it makes sense if you translate it with an -ing form and see if it makes any sense, and if it does, then you can choose a nicer English noun as the translation.

We have no Late Quenya examples of gerunds for either ya-formatives or ya-causatives, but all gerunds we see are formed with -ie. For Middle Quenya we have more variation with sirya- → sirie, siryare, siryave. How to regularize that is to some extent a matter of taste.
