Bado go Eru?

Cloav #2019

I've seen the phrase "Noro go hûl, bado go Eru (tr. Run with the wind, go with God)" circulated online, but it doesn't come up when searching elfdict, which leaves me wondering whether it is accurate or not. I like it because it is reminiscent of the old sendoff "Godspeed". Is there any source for this phrase within Tolkien's works? If not, what would be a properly translated Quenyan equivalent to "go with God" or "Godspeed"? TIA!

It is not from Tolkien himself, it is Neo-Elvish, that is the attempt to translate new things after studying what Tolkien wrote about the languages. It doesn't show up because Parf Edhellen only collects words (and attested sentences from Tolkien), not every possible sentence you could form with those. I would say that the Sindarin outcome of Primitive Elvish "with" is gu rather than go and I believe it would be safer to use the later root PAT instead of BAT for "walk", so noro gu-hûl, pado/padro gu-Eru

Also note that this sentence is Sindarin, not Quenya (no n here).

BTW, the hyphen is optional. There could alternatively be a space between gu and hûl/Eru.

And my rendition of "run with [the] wind, walk with God" in Quenya is nora ó súre, pata ó Eru.

Thank you both, this is very helpful!

Of course, Gilruin, you're right about Parf Edhellen only collecting words and not all the Neo-Elvish phrases anyone comes up with at random. I was a bit hasty with the way I asked my questions.

To be more precise, certain words, like bado, don't come up when I search for them, but I believe this is due to user error. The alternatives pado/padro don't come up either, but pada-/padra- do, so I gather that I need to know the "unconjugated" (infinitive?) form of a verb in order for it to come up in a search, is that right?

Thank you Quirinius for the Quenya (no n, whoops!) version!

Exactly. The words in the Sindarin version are:

  • nor- in its imperative noro "run!"
  • gu a neologism for "with"
  • sûl in its soft mutated from hûl (because gu ends in a vowel)
  • pad-/padra- in the imperative pado/padro "walk!"
  • Eru
