Extracting singular from collective nouns ...

Giovanni #1837

Hi,

I'm probably asking something already discussed or very clear to everybody yet, but I'm new to the website and I hope you will forgive me.

My doubt is: what if I have to address a single individual of a people, the name of which has, for example, the suffix "-rim"? I mean: the people known as the Elves of the Falas are the "Falathrim", but one single elf belonging to the Falathrim folk is ...?

Thank you.

One could use the usual agental suffix -ron, and for females -ril.

  • one male/unspecified Falathron, one female Falathril;

  • or the construction edhel Falathren, "Shore-ish elf;"

  • or Falassedhel/Falassel, based on Thinnedhel.
