Fortress of the Heavens

Troy Alford #92

I am very new to this, so please forgive me if my question is a little primitive and uninformed.

I am attempting to correctly form the name of an ancient city which is known as the "Fortress of the Heavens" or "Fortress of the Gods." Fortress could also be replaced with City, Castle, Keep, or Citadel, if it results in a prettier overall name.

Do any of the following seem "most correct"?

  • Minas Valion - minas (tower or city with a tower) and Valion (of the Lords)
  • Minas Valar - (same as above)
  • Valarost - from valar (angelic power/gods) and ost (fortress)
  • Ostvalion - ost (fortress) and valion (of the lords)

I'd love any other suggestions, too - or corrections on how I'm combining words.

I'd also love any help that's possible in correctly rendering the final name in elven script. :)

Hi Troy, and welcome to Parf Edhellen!

You have combined Sindarin and Quenya. That is like combining German with Italian! You need to decide on the language with which to translate Fortress of the Heavens.

Quenya:

  • Mindon Valaron Mindon Valaron "Tower of the Gods"
  • Osto Valaron Osto Valaron "Fortress of the Gods"

Sindarin:

  • Minas Belain Minas Belain "Tower of the Gods"
  • Ost Belain Ost Belain "Fortress of the Gods"

Oh, nuts. I tried really hard to not do that. Thanks for straightening me out! I think in this case I am going to go with Quenya - and I very much appreciate the translations. :)

It looks like the name of my city will be Osto Valaron. <3
