Information about earlier "certificate expired" incident

Aldaleon #1207

Hi everyone,

I just want to inform you about the outage that happened earlier today. The outage was caused by an expired certificate. We use this kind of certificate to encrypt the connection from your devices. The certificate is usually renewed automatically before it expires, but something went wrong this time around.

For the duration of the outage, your browser may have warned you about "potential theft" and "malware." This is a necessary built-in precaution in our modern browsers that warns us about sites who pretend to be someone (or something) they are not. For Parf Edhellen however, these warnings were false. Your information was not compromised during this incident, and no third-parties had gained control of our service.

I posted a brief update to that effect on Twitter. I have now renewed the certificate. So, everything is up and running as normal again! If you have any questions or concerns about this, please do not hesitate to either reach out to me on Twitter, or use this thread for your questions.

I do apologise for the confusion, and I am will find and eliminate the root cause to prevent repeat incidents like this.

Thanks,
Aldaleon.

Oof. How annoying. That happened to me once with the Eldamo site.

Modern browsers do make these kinds of errors look more serious than the actually are. You have my sympathies on the necessary triage to reassure people this was, in fact, harmless.

Thank you, Paul! What made it worse is that it happened during my vacation - I was lucky that I had brought my laptop!
