Community update

Aldaleon #560

Hi everyone,

I just want to give a brief update on what is going on with Parf Edhellen.

At the moment, I am in the process of reengineering the frontend application, which is essentially the things you see and interact with on the website. The new solution will appear the same as today, but the new solution will be more rigorously tested and perform better. Unfortunately, there is a lot to reengineer, and to date, I have made 41 code changes on a separate code branch. Currently, the search and dictionary view is operational. Next, I will implement flashcards, phrases, and discussions (in that order).

Once the transition is done, I will be moving forward with some relatively "big" changes related to neologisms and community-curated dictionaries, related to the suggestions from the What is your opinion on neologisms? thread. That will be fun - looking forward to it!

I will regularly give brief updates here to update you on my progress.

Regards,

Aldaleon

Hi again,

I have integrated the feeds with the user interface and polished the external part of the website to a degree I am confident it is ready to be released. However, I would like to complete the gloss form prior to releasing the new version of the website.

Progress here has been slow as it depends on a number of very complicated components, specifically the account, gloss, word and translation selection components. I would like to reengineer them as the components today are not very intuitive to use. The first component I am tackling is what i call TagInput, which is essentially the component you interact with when you add English glosses to your word. Once it is done, I will move on to the next component in the list: account and word selection.

We are close. I hope to release the next version of Parf Edhellen by the end of the month.

Thanks,

Aldaleon

Hello everyone,

So I did not quite release the new version of the website by the end of May, but I have continued the work.

Two important changes are coming to the transcription feature and the glossary.

Transcription is completely overhauled with improved functionality to preview transcriptions and to experiment with different modes. We will continue to use Glaemscribe as the underlying transcription library.

Glossary changes are henceforth only going through the contribution review process. This includes contributions by our administrators. That way, we maintain full attribution and audit trails of changes in the dictionary.

I finished these parts last night, and will proceed to overhaul the profile page. Once that is done, only small tweaks remain, as I have decided to release the website without sentence contribution support. I will add that functionality later, as it will require a lot of work to get done well.

Regarding sources, I will import words from the latest version of Eldamo after the website updates are done. It is coming!

Thank you for your continued support.
