Gloss "elendil" by Eldamo Import

Every source online I found translates "elendil" primarily as "elf-lover", and a few mention the translation "student of stars" or "Star-lover" as well. It seems that "elf-lover" is more commonly used as a translation, but I'm curious when/where did the second translation originate?

I was thinking of getting a tattoo of the word in Tengwar, and I'd like to know more about it and to make sure it really means both things, it's important to me. Thank you! :)
