Breathe in Quenya

Marcy Dice #486

Hi guys, I'm new. I love this site and how streamlined/comprehensive it is.

I looked up the translation for the word "breathe," and found that it is "suya," but I can't find out to pronounce it. Can someone help me out with the phonetic pronunciation? I'd really appreciate it.

The s is sharp and the ú is long, like the s in surname and the ou in soup, or in you. The y is like the y in yes. The a is a bit tricky for it is spelled very differently in various English words. In Quenya an a is always like the u in under, or in fun.

Step 1: Take a deep breath.

Yes I’m a bit ashamed of that one

Step 2: The first syllable is pronounced as in the proper name “Sue” and receives the stress. The second syllable is pronounced “yaw” as in “yawn”, never with the sound of “a” as in “bat”. So in summary: SUE-yaw.

Hoping this may have helped, Farewell.

namárie.

Here's an audio file that'll illustrate the pronunciation.

Thank you guys for helping with the pronunciation. I'm also curious how to write this out, but I'm not asking anyone to do that for me, what I really want to know is - are there any online translator sites that you guys trust? I don't want to do a silly translator and have it be way off.

Yes, this is for a tattoo, sorry if you guys get that a lot.

Hi Marcy, and welcome to Parf Edhellen! You can use our own transcriber for that!

How do I access the transcriber?

Or do you just do it for us?

Aldaleon #1236

Hi Anwion!

Parf Edhellen uses Glaemscribe for automatic transcription into Tengwar. You can access the transcriber while creating glosses or when editing your profile page.

In comments or on your profile page, you can also use custom Markdown syntax to trigger the transcriber. As an example, to transcribe into Quenya, simply type @quenya:aiya!@ (aiya!); Sindarin @sindarin|mae govannen!@ (mae govannen!); Sindarin (Beleriand) @sindarin-beleriand|mae govannen!@ (mae govannen!); Black Speech @blackspeech|azg nazg@ (azg nazg) and several others (refer to the transcriber for supported modes, and Github for abbrevations).

Cheers,
Aldaleon

Alright! Thanks!

Are the transcriptions able to be copy and pasted?
