  • A word for "code" ?

    As often, homonymy is our ban. a code is defined as the representation of a meaning by a sign chosen arbitrarily (like morse), by opposition to a chiffre where the assignation follow a logic (like javascript), the base of encryption (like SHA-1).

    My thought is there should be different elvish words to name the different concepts. my trial in Quenya :

    • Muinatehtelë (secret scripture) could be the secret writing, like code enigma
    • Notessetehtelë (digital scripture) could be the computer coding, like hexadecimal
    • Lambë (tongue, language) is by itself a code, Notesselambë could thus be a programmation language. like Java.

    I am pretty sure that if these words was of use for the elven had, they would have evolve in a more compact way.

  • Gloss “kulusta” by Eldamo Import

    I have wonderings about this one.

    CULU / KULU / CULO is stated as appearing in Etymologies but abandoned by Tolkien and replaced by MALTA / MALDA, also in Etymologies.

    On the other hand, "piece of silver" is TELPILIN , gerund of TELPË = "silver" --> "money"

    why does "piece of gold" is not KULUILIN (gerund of KULU) or MALTASTA (suffix. {verbal noun} for MALTA) ?

    I cannnot say that i am happy that we share the same conclusion. I was feeling wretched in front of seasoned quenya writers. i now feel somehow deceived.

    The song was supposed to say :

    come on, let's drink in anticipation of the combat.

    to the ennemi, eternals.

    Hello all.

    Here is a song composed more than 15 years ago by french larpers supposedly in quenya. It is passed from mouth to ear as a badge of belonging in the elvish Community.

    Having received it in written form recently, i found that its structure was weird. So i checked it here, as i did with key words of the translation.

    Either the composer is far beyond me in quenya, or he pretty botched it.

    Would be please make your traduction of the Following text ?

    I keep the translation for now to avoid to rout your work.

    I may have a problem with AIR.

    "Vilyaistar" has a mega diphtong. Even pronounced in hiatud it doesn't seem right.

    thanks elaran.

    I was in the feeling that ISTAR was not only the name of the highest grade of wizard, but a divine category like maiar or valar. It was I try not to use it. with all these synonyms mixing knowledge an dwizardy , i touht it would be easier.

    But you are right, it sounds great.

    Proper grammar elude me. How would you translate : "mage of (the) fire"

    i was thinking of Nólanaro but it could be Naronóla or Narnóli (or 5 others shape)

    I have the same problem with the 4 élémentals

    idem with "mage of the darkness" : nólaLúna it is not a "black mage" nor a user of "black magic" (morgul) nor a mage with black hair. (like fingolfin) the chance of errors is high on this one.
