Hello! I'm a life long Tolkien fan and I'm learning Sindarin rn (only a starter's starter), then I discovered this wonderful website! Looking forward to my studies here! <33

Also, can anybody tell me how I-affection works? I learnt it in China and I don't think anybody's explained it properly

Celebrinor #4760

Welcome! I invite you to Vinyë Lambengolmor our discord server. We discuss a lot on there. For I-affection this may help a little. If not let us know.

Hello! Discord is not available in my area, so I didn't create an account, although I can visit it temporarily. I read the explanation about I-affection, now it makes a lot more sense!

Also could you give me some advice on how to begin Sindarin (for example some resources?)

Celebrinor #4767

I would check out Fiona's book A Fan's Guide to Neo-Sindarin and Eldamo is a great source. Though Fiona's book is a little of out of date it is a great place to start.

Ellanto #4773

I should add that Fiona will be releasing a second edition of her book sometime in the near(-ish) future, so it may be worth waiting for that. I don't agree with many of her decisions there, but it is a good resource for beginners nonetheless.

Eldamo, as Celebrinor suggested, is indeed an excellent resource, though a little advanced, and could be a little confusing at first. Sadly its grammar articles on Sindarin are also not all complete yet.

Celebrinor's own website, sindarincrashcourse.neocities.org, is also a good place to look for concise summaries.

The best approach would be to combine all of the above, starting from Fiona's book and Celebrinor's website until you have some basic grasp of things, and then looking into the Eldamo grammar articles to get a deeper understanding of the context and the various debates surrounding the material.

Great. Thanks for both the advice and the resources! I looked up Eldamo briefly and it doesn't seem to have other types of Sindarin like North Sindarin or Old Sindarin, except for the most used one, is there somewhere else where I can study more about other types of Sindarin?

Ellanto #4777

There is very little known about Old Sindarin and North Sindarin, and very few studies of them, sadly. Fiona's book has some stuff about North Sindarin, but I'm afraid I cannot vouch for the accuracy of her reconstruction. I myself haven't yet gotten around to trying to figure North Sindarin out... Maybe someday. As for Old Sindarin, that is potentially even trickier because it is not really clear what/when Old Sindarin was.

At any rate I wouldn't recommend pursuing either of those before you are proficient with "standard" Sindarin.

OK. I'm just trying to understand the approximate system briefly before I dive deep into "standard" Sindarin - I think that might help. Thanks again for the information.
