The last king of Arthedain, whose name was translated “Last-king” (LotR/1050). His name came from a prophecy of Malbeth that he would be the last king of Arthedain, either because it would be reunited with Gondor or because it would fall. His name is a compound of the prefix ar(a)- “noble, royal” and the lenited form vedui of medui “last”.
