Relatively simple transcribe I hope!

Hi All, First of all, what a fantastic site of information in respect to the Tolkien languages. Well done to all those who have contributed to it!

Secondly, like many of the discussions, I am looking for some help in translating a phrase to Sindarin, both in words and script. The phrase i want to translate is:

Forge your own path.

Despite the obvious references to forging of swords and rings within the books there does not seem to be a Sindarin word equivalent for forge. In Quenya it would appear to be tamin. Is it safe to assume that the same word would be used in Sindarin or have I just offended half the elves and all the language expets with such a crude simplistic suggestion?

Anyway I would greatly appreciate any advice on how to translate this and what it would look like in Sindarin script.

Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to Parf Edhellen!

Your sentence is actually surprisingly difficult to translate into elvish because there is no known way to say “your own” in Sindarin. Therefore, I have gone ahead and transcribed it using the English mode of Tengwar. Just as pretty, don’t you think?

Forge your own path

Thanks for your warm welcome Aldaleon and for your advice around the phrase.

Are there perhaps any alternatives that would convey the same or similar meaning? For example could I perhaps use Caro lín râd (Make thy path)? I am not sure of the sentence structure here either but would appreciate any further advice you could provide.

Thanks again

Certainly! You can translate:

Caro den i ven lín
caro den i ven lín
Forge [it] your path

Based on the Lord's prayer.

Thanks again Aldaleon.

I understand (I think) most of what you have provided but I am lost a bit on the path (ha ha lost on the path, perhaps it is mirkwood). I am assuming by deduction that your use of 'ven' in the elvish part represents path but I can't find any other reference to this term and thought that râd was the Sindarin word for path? Can you clarify for me please.

Thanks

*ven represents men, which means ”path” and has undergone soft mutation due to it being the object of the verb car-, which is derived from Q: car-.

Oh ok then. Thank you both very much for the advice provided.
